October Events

Well September disappeared quickly!  I've got a couple ideas for MoTab Run Club this month.  I'm going to plan on the Riverton, Utah Great Pumpkin Race, October 23.  Its on a Friday night and is a night run.  If we register in groups of 3 its only 15 each (otherwise its 25 per person).  It includes a shirt and a finishers medal.  Let me know if you want to get registered.  To find the registration page, you have to search for activities, Race Series, Great Pumpkin Race. http://www.slco.org/recreation/jlsorenson/raceSeries/Great_Pumpkin_5K.html

The other race I've always done for Halloween is the Running Scared 5K or 10K, October 31.  Its out in Herriman and it just runs through a neighborhood-but there's a nice carnival for families and costumes are encouraged.  Shirts and medals are included, but its a bit spendy at 25.00 per adult (10% off coupon code right now, RSem215).   http://www.runningscaredrace.com/

MoTab Runclubbers...we have our next event coming right up!  Saturday, August 22 we'll participate in the U of U's Run in Rhythm 5K.  Its a FREE event--but you do need to register.  Register ASAP--they run out of t-shirts if you wait til the last minute.  The run is on the U of U campus, so its guaranteed to have some uphill.  As a bonus, there is a free health fair after the run.  Holly Abel and her husband are big fans of this event, so Holly is going to be our group's "point person"  look for her before the race for some inspirational stickers for your race bib and take a photo.

Running on Tour

Lots of running happened on our 2 week tour... great job Run Club!

Its probably time for another event.  There is a free 5K on July 24 in Provo...the Temple to Temple 5K.  Anyone down in Utah County want to be the "host" for any in our group who want to attend?

Another possible event is the Taylorsville Triathalon on August 8...a super beginner event that is $15 per person.   Anyone want to branch out beyond running?

There's a great free event at the U of U, the Run in Rhythm on August 22...I've done that one (as have Camille and Holly)--who wants to be the "host" on that one?

New York

There have been lots of folks asking about running in Central Park while we are in NYC.  Since everyone will have their own plans in NYC, their own schedules and their own run pace, we'll keep this a bit more casual.   Common sense says that you should always go out with someone else (and tell folks where you are going and when you plan on being back).

The Marriott Marquis is about 1 mile from the Columbus Circle corner of the park , which is pretty much a straight shot up 7th Ave.  The Central Park folks have lots of info on their website about running paths (the expected direction you should run, right of way etc...)

If you were to run the perimeter of the park, its about 6 miles--but you could do shorter or longer runs.  Here are some running routes a NYC run group posted.
http://www.walkjogrun.net/groups/centralpark

So, I suggest that you start looking at the map, looking at your schedule and make a comment below about what you are hoping to do/when to see if there are others who want to do the same thing as you!

Fun Run Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the 5K Fun Run!  Start time is 8:00 am in the center plaza of President's Circle on the U of U Campus (pretty much 200 S. and University Ave (1350 E.--if you've ever been to Kingsbury Hall or Libby Gardner, both those buildings are on President's Circle).

Look for Stephanie Wood, Camille Kingman or Ryan Snarr somewhere near the check in tables--we'll be there handing out awesome run club stickers for our crew!

Parking on a Saturday morning shouldn't be too bad.  There are spots all along the circle, but you can also park along 200 South--or if all else fails you can park at the football stadium and walk down (10 min walk).  There is also a visitor parking lot off of 100 South and about 1500 East...but harder to find your way from there  if you aren't familiar with campus).

The course does have some elevation (it is on the U campus)--but the good thing is that most of the uphill is at the beginning...the last part is downhill!

First 5K? Here are some tips.
  • Drink plenty of water the day before.
  • The morning of the race drink some water when you first get up and then hit the bathroom before you leave home. No gulping large quantities just before the race--fluid management!!
  • Eat an easy snack like a granola bar-nothing too heavy or greasy or hard to digest.
  • Get your heart rate going--run in place or back and forth along the sidewalk a bit
  • Wear sunscreen or a hat and sunglasses, and if you think you'll need it bring a water bottle (there will be at least 1 aid station with water during the run)
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Its not too late to register yourself or friends and family.  The weather looks like it will be ideal for a run.  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/healthy-stem-5k-and-stem-fair-2015-tickets-16400554500

Have you registered yet?

To take some liberties with Alma 32:27 "But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise with a little portion of running, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to run, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.” Our first official event is a 5K on Saturday, May 30th.  If you aren’t ready to run, walking is an awesome way to participate.  It will be at the U of U campus and start at around 8am.  Registration for the 5K event is now open, so come join us!

Grab your popcorn, and lace up your shoes, these movies are about running

I’ve found that the right movie can get you pumped up for some nice physical activity. I still want to spar with everyone in sight after seeing the original Karate Kid’s tournament fight montage. A couple years ago for a separate running blog, I compiled a list of a few films on running that’ll inspire you to get out on your feet. Truthfully, there really aren’t that many shows about running, let alone really good ones. I could probably add Forrest Gump to the list below since running is a reoccurring theme in the show; however, despite its reoccurrence in Forrest’s adventures it is a small part of a very long show that makes me want to open a history book rather than put on a pair of trainers. McFarland and Unbroken are a couple of more recent and well-known shows that focus on the subject, but are not mentioned below. The films below are listed in order of pump-me-up-and-make-me-want-to-run-ness.
Spirit of the Marathon – 2007
Of all the films I’ve watched about running, this is the one that made me most want to get up off the couch, lace up my sneakers and pound out 10 miles of asphalt. It’s a great look at novice runners and their first marathon.
--
Run for your Life – Fred Lebow: The Father of the NYC Marathon – 2009
This is an inspiring film about the passion that Fred Lebow had for running. This film gives some fascinating insight on people that are behind the scenes of some of the biggest races in the nation. It also gives a great description of the long distance running trend that began in the 70s. It should make you want to go for a run.
--
Marathon – NOVA – 2007
Marathon is a good look at a group of first time marathoners. They come from all walks of life. Anyone that watches this can probably relate to at least one of the runners.
--
This isn’t a movie, but surely you can spare 6 minutes online and check out Bill Murray on  Late Night with David Letterman preparing for a marathon.
--
Without Limits – 1998
The story of Steve Prefontaine is told in this film from the late 90s. Prefontaine was a phenomenal talent in his time in long distance running. The film documents his experience in the ’72 Olympics in Munich as well as his tragic death shortly thereafter. Donald Sutherland is the headline actor in this film as Prefontaine’s coach at Oregon State. Very interesting story about a man’s speed told in a slow moving film. It’s okay.
--
Chariots of Fire – 1981 Academy Award for Best Film
Running is this film’s secondary theme despite the fact that it is a show all about running. It won the Academy Award in ’81 for Best Film by telling a story of two Olympic runners who despite being strong on the track demonstrate their moral strength in sticking to their personal convictions. Again, another show about the speed of men on their feet, but it’s a slow mover. I’d be more inclined to watch this film to admire the cinematography and it’s period style than to watch it to get pumped up for a run. And of course you'll recognize the legendary musical running theme. The music seems to sound better in my mind than in the show. I didn't realize how computer generated the sound is.

--
Saint Ralph – 2004
Saint Ralph is a story about a boy who copes with his mother’s illness through discovering a passion for running. He ultimately competes in the Boston Marathon. This film is quirky enough to grab one’s attention, but not to keep it. Maybe it is my inability to stay awake through a 2-hour movie now days, but this one put me to sleep. I did catch the last few scenes and didn’t see enough pay off there to rewind and discover what it was that I had missed. Sorry Ralphy.

Haven't started training yet?  Its not too late!  This Saturday (after conference of course) get outside and go for a run!  Me, I just ordered another new pair of shoes to try out (um, I may or may not already have about 6 pairs of shoes...but more is better right?)

Have you made a plan?

Whether you run all the time or are just getting going, making a plan is an important step in getting to your goal.  Have you got a run goal for yourself?  What are you planning to help yourself achieve that goal?  What helps you motivated?  For those of you using our 5K training plan for the May 30th event, tomorrow is a 1.5 mile run.  Some days I get up and feel ready to go, other days...eh, not so much.  One of my tricks is to put on my running clothes and shoes even if I'm not convinced I really want to go.  I usually end up heading out the door-even if I've bargained with myself that I don't have to do the full run--once I get going I usually do.    That being said, there have been days that the run just feels "off"--maybe its nothing specific, or maybe its that annoying chronic injury.  Whatever the case, I've learned to not feel bad if the run doesn't go as planned.  I might try again in the evening, or the next day.

I'm headed out tomorrow for an easy run in what looks to be a pretty nice day.  Hope you will be outside too!  Feel free to share with our group how your Saturday run went!

CHOOSE TO RUN - Set to the tune of Hymn #239

Choose to run, when you wake up in the morning,
When you run, have friends on either side,
Your reward, will appear right when you finish,
If you run your end won't be so wide.

(Chorus)
Choose to run! Choose to run!
In wisdom plan the route you'll tour.
Stretch out right, don't get tight!
And God will bless you evermore.

Choose to run, when a lion is behind you,
Don't dare stop, or else you'll probably die.
It's a fact, that the sluggish one get's eaten,
Rest after passing the slowest guy.

On Choir tour, run to the buffet table,
Get first choice, on bacon or on fries
Don't be slow, to finish up your meal
Or you'll miss out on all the dessert pies.

Fun Apps for Runners

I love my iPhone.  Two years ago I reluctantly headed into the Verizon store with my flip phone that had been dropped one too many times to get a new phone.  I had decided that like it or not, I was going to have to get a smart phone.  I laugh now because it took me about, oh an hour, before I realized that my iPhone is the coolest thing ever.  I don't do tons and tons of apps, but the ones I deign to install on my precious phone have to be useful to me.  Here are some that I've used for running.  Please chime in with ones that you like too.

Stephanie

Strava Run-Free, Apple and Android.  GPS app that tracks your pace and maps out your run.
IntervalTimer-Free, Apple (not sure on Android).  You can set alarms to set up run/walk segments during your run.
MyFitnessPal-Free, Apple and Android. Lets you set diet and fitness goals, adds social networking if you want.
MilePost-Free version has ads, Apple (not sure on Android).  Daily running quotes.
Zinio-Free.  Not a fitness app, but the Salt Lake County Library System offers free magazine access to its card holders using this app.  Runner's World is one of the magazines you can get.  Ask your SLCO librarian about it (not sure if other library systems have this).

Calling all Runners

We're excited to announce an officially sanctioned Run Club in the MoTab organization!  We want participants from the choir, orchestra, bells, chorale, staff, production folks, stage crew and your families!  We want runners of all abilities, including the "I-run-because-it-makes-me-happy" folks as well as the "I-only-run-if-zombies-are-chasing-me" people.

As choir tour is coming up, we will be preparing musically and spiritually, but we can also be be preparing physically.  You may be thinking that running is not your thing; no problem!  Walkers are welcome too.  We even have a running training plan if you want to work your way up from walking to running a 5K.  The training plan eases you in with a combo of run/walk.  As with any new exercise endeavor, you should consult with your doctor about what will work for you.

Our first event is to participate in a 5K fun run sponsored by the Utah State Office of Education.  This is a family friendly event that supports STEM education (science, tech, engineering, math).  This 5K (3.1 miles) is scheduled to be on Saturday, May 30 at the U of U.  Registration info is coming soon, but it will be $5 for adults and $2 for kids.

Keep an eye on the blog for info about more training ideas, how to stay motivated or other Run Club events that you might be interested in.  If you have questions, you can check with Stephanie Wood, Ryan Snarr, Camille Kingman or Valerie Morton (we're looking for a contact person in the orchestra and bells, let us know if you are interested).  Feel free to join this blog so we can support each other in Run Club.
